Is A City Outside Orlando Installing Red Light Cameras Just To Make A Buck On Traffic Tickets?

A debate is raging in a small town outside of Orlando. Groveland, Florida is installing cameras on all the traffic lights in town to catch drivers who run red lights. The problem? American Traffic Solutions would install the free cameras and give the city 70% of the revenue that is raised. Mayor Richard Smith was quoted as saying the company claimed the city could raise six-figures at each intersection where a camera is installed. The mayor was also quoted as saying that the money raised from the cameras could help prevent layoffs and make the streets safer at the same time. The City of Orlando, which also uses cameras at intersections, said it raised $500,000.00 in an eight-month span using the cameras.
